ParaNet Information Services and MICAP publish a combined quarterly magazine that's packed with the latest news and features on the UFO enigma, and we do it in a manner that's unlike any other UFO magazine. There are no new age columns, no absurd articles like "Elvis was an alien", and no unsubstantiated claims. Just good, timely news on breaking stories, intelligent articles and investigations underway.
CONTINUUM Magazine is not for everyone! This is the quarterly journal of ParaNet and MICAP, and it doesn't have tabloid-type stories of unsubstantiated UFO abductions or fake pictures of aliens and their ships (well, thatÆs not quite true - we did publish a faked picture once along with a commentary of how easy it is to make fake pictures these days with computer scanners and inexpensive photo editing software, in an effort to show how important it is for investigators to find more than pictures when evaluating UFO events). It does have interesting and well thought out articles by a variety of scientists, psychologists and engineers. Our goal is to inform you and make you think, not to entertain you!
Check out the stories we've run over the last year and you'll see what we mean. We do plan to enhance the magazine over the coming year, with more pictures, better art and improved layout. But we're pretty proud of what we've got now, and we've received great comments from many professionals about the quality of the magazine!

HereÆs a short excerpt from a story from the Fall, 1995 issueà
Recently, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) received some important encouragement. Until this year, astronomers could not verify the existence of planets around any star but our own. This "negative fact" was somewhat embarrassing to those of us who are open to the possibility of advanced spacefaring civilizations. Now new methods suggest that at least two planets are in orbit around 51 Pegasus, a G4 type star (similar to our own) only 42 light years away. While the preliminary orbital data suggests that the inner planet may be a Venus-like inferno, the jury is still out on the details.
Soon other star systems may yield their secrets to the "wobble method" that astronomers use to infer the existence of planets (by measuring the tiny wobble they give their mother star). As the search goes forward, new planets favorable to life may be identified. This search will take time, but because of the excellent science done in discovering the 51 Pegasus system, "normal science" (Kuhn, 1970) must now grant additional legitimacy to some "frontier" areas: star system cartography, exogeology, exobiology, and more. This transition is made easier because mainly new content, not new method, is at issue. The new content is available to every observer equally. All can "see" the facts at hand.
We have argued that a scientific ufology, by relying on indirect methods and inference, resembles exogeology before 51 Pegasus: a gamete awaiting fertilization by a single scientific fact. However, what constitutes a "fact" is not so obvious as it seems (Fleck, 1979). Real facts work to bridge the gap between speculation and theory. Some recent ufological data may signal the development of "working facts." Such facts "work" because they change the very framework used to discover and interpret them. Working facts are the precursors for new forms of human thought and activity. Just as the 51 Pegasus data will revise existing views on planetary evolution, so ufological observations that are not physically verifiable can still work to modify their own interpretive framework. But to do work, they must be facts--public and consensual, and not the usual oversupply of dead rumors and hearsay, capable of doing no work at all.
Because we have been uncompromising on the concepts of social consensus and public validation in any ufological science, some have labeled us "debunkers". We welcome responses to our ideas, and we are flattered when we attract enough notice to be criticized, but we believe the "debunker" label to be misplaced. Although we call for a "scientific" ufology, we still reject those "naive realist" and "common-sense" biases that tend to exclude psychological explanations. These biases have even kept alive the controversy over whether psychology can be called scientific (Laurence, 1995).

ParaNet runs several computer networks. The original ParaNet system, which uses the Fidonet PC-based network, has been in existence since 1988 and continues to operate. It consists of a global network of linked BBSs with thousands of files on UFOs and other phenomena, as well as discussion groups. ParaNet's BBS is at (303) 863-0469. ParaNet's UFO investigations department, MICAP, also runs a BBS, at (303) 985-5903.
Some cool screen shots of the BBSs.
Many of the discussion groups are gated onto the Usenet (on the Internet) and back under the following names:
alt.paranet.ufo
alt.paranet.paranormal
alt.paranet.abduct
alt.paranet.psi
alt.paranet.metaphysics
alt.paranet.skeptics
alt.paranet.science
(Note! Not all service providers feed the alt newsgroups. Some require you to authorize them. If you have trouble, check with your service provider!)
We also maintain a subforum on CompuServe. ParaNet is area 10 in the new MYSTERIES forum. There you'll find some of our library files available for download and another discussion group. While many of the same discussions take place on the Usenet and Fidonet versions of ParaNet, the CompuServe area has the advantage of being moderated, so there is less "noise". We also have some excellent resident experts there, such as Greg Wheeler, Ph.D., our staff psychologist, and his assistant Scott Scribner, both experts in abduction research.
For you MSN devotees, we have a forum on MSN but have not activated it. However, if there is sufficient interest we may change our minds. Microsoft accepted ParaNet as a Content Provider, but as many of you know, they changed their minds about how they wanted MSN to exist, and that has kept us from completing the MSN area. However, there is a Sighting report form there, which is accessible if you search for "UFO". It's a Word version of the form that you'll find on this web site.
ParaNet also has a presence on America Online (AOL). We have an ongoing relationship with the TV show Sightings, and we stay in touch with the producer of that show, who also runs the Sightings area on AOL. If you have a topic that you think might be suited for a segment on Sightings, give us a call or e-mail us and we'll put you in touch with the Sightings research department. If it's a UFO-related event, we'll also let our MICAP department in on it! We also stay in touch with OMNI Online and the National Space Society (NSS), both of which have AOL sites.
"It is of great importance that the general public be given an opportunity to experience - consciously and intelligently - the effects and results of scientific research. It is not sufficient that each result be taken up, elaborated, and applied by a few specialists in the field. Restricting the body of knowledge to a small group deadens the philosophical spirit of a people and leads to spiritual poverty." -- Albert Einstein

What is MICAP?
MICAP is an international organization dedicated to promoting focused, responsible, scientific research on unidentified aerial anomalies. Founded in 1991, MICAP is an outgrowth of the world renowned ParaNet Information Services, an international electronic news-gathering and news-distribution network. Since 1988, ParaNet has provided a link between "armchair ufologists" and the world's leading UFO researchers. Additionally, ParaNet has become an invaluable research tool, unparalleled anywhere else. MICAP was founded to enhance and coordinate the research efforts already being carried on in this field by investigators and organizations around the world. Over the last forty years, a great deal of UFO research has been conducted at the local level by independent UFO organizations , and there have been occasional attempts to bring these efforts together on the national level both in the United States and elsewhere.. However, in all that time, very little progress has been made toward gaining an understanding of what these anomalies represent -- in part because the problem is global in nature. There has also been too much rivalry among the various UFO organizations, which has often resulted in duplication of effort, monumental egotism, and all the other ills for which Ufology is infamous.
Clearly there is a need for a cooperative, global effort directed toward UFO research. MICAP is designed to answer that need. MICAP is not a UFO club. It is a scientifically based organization founded on scientific methodology, and is intended solely for discovering facts rather than for propagating religious, philosophical or political convictions. We are under no illusion that we already know the answers; the first step, indeed, is to achieve a better understanding of what the questions are! Furthermore, MICAP is not intended to replace or compete with existing UFO organizations. Rather, its goal is to establish cooperative working relationships with other organizations in order to help them achieve a greater understanding of the complexity of the UFO enigma. MICAP is designed to function as the United Nations of the UFO research community and its goals will be pursued by four strategies: global data collection, standards-based scientific investigation, public education, and active, trained membership.
Global Data Collection
One of MICAP's first efforts has been the establishment of a central clearinghouse for data culled from independent local and international sources. This information is being combined in a computer database accessible by authorized researchers from around the world.
Standards-based Scientific Investigation
MICAP works with the scientific community to establish sound and accepted principles and standards by which the UFO phenomenon can be investigated. Every effort is made to assure that collected data is of the highest quality, and field investigators are selected and trained using the most stringent criteria practicable. MICAP bridges the gap that currently exists between scientific Ufology and the rest of the scientific community.
Public Education
The public often has a gross misunderstanding of what the UFO phenomenon represents, based on media hype, rank speculation, and deliberate disinformation. MICAP strives to replace the mythology surrounding UFOs with verifiable facts based on scientific investigation. This is accomplished through positive and aggressive public education in the media, through its own publications, and through classroom curricula developed in conjunction with professional educators.
Active, Trained Membership
For its membership, MICAP is seeking concerned men and women from around the world who are seriously interested in unlocking the secrets behind the UFO phenomenon. MICAP members, unlike any other UFO organizations, will play active roles in the pursuit of organizational goals; they are not restricted simply to the financial support of the organization. Instead, they will have the opportunity to actively participate in the investigation and collection of data if they wish. Members will benefit from MICAP's educational efforts, as well as access to the largest, most sophisticated network of UFO investigators in the world. A membership application (attached) must accompany payment.
